Going to the Dentist

Know what to expect at a dental visit: checking in, the waiting room, the exam chair, cleaning, and heading home.

Going to the Dentist: step-by-step guide

A dental visit follows the same order every time. Watch the video, then read the steps so each part of the appointment feels familiar before you arrive.

  1. Arrive a few minutes early and tell the person at the front desk your name and appointment time.

  2. Sit in the waiting room until a dental assistant calls your name.

  3. Follow the assistant to the exam room and sit in the big chair. The chair leans back slowly.

  4. The assistant may take pictures of your teeth with a small camera or X-ray machine.

  5. Open your mouth so the hygienist can clean your teeth with a small brush and a water tool that makes a buzzing sound.

  6. Rinse and spit into the small sink or suction straw when asked.

  7. The dentist looks at your teeth for a minute or two and tells you what looks healthy.

  8. Stop at the front desk to set your next visit, then you are done.

Helpful tips

  • Bring headphones or a fidget if the buzzing sound bothers you.
  • You can raise your hand any time you need a break.
