Write a clear email: greeting, a short middle that says what you need, and a polite closing with your name.

How to Write an Email: step-by-step guide

A good email has three short parts. Watch the video, then write one of your own.

  1. Open your email app and start a new message.

  2. Type the address of the person you are writing to.

  3. Write a subject line of a few words, such as Question about Friday.

  4. Start the message with a greeting, such as Hello Ms. Lee.

  5. Write one or two sentences saying what you need or want to share.

  6. Close with Thank you and your name.

  7. Read it once, then press Send.

Ask Iris

See it first. Go with confidence.

Hi, I'm Iris! Tell me what you're looking for: a place to preview (like "Park Library" or "a dentist office"), a specific city (like "Lansing, MI" or "Petoskey, MI"), or a how-to video (like "tying shoes" or "self-checkout"), and I'll find it for you.
