How To Check Oil

A free Able Eyes how-to video on How To Check Oil. With step-by-step guidance for everyday independence at home.

How To Check Oil: step-by-step guide

Checking the oil helps keep a car running. Do it when the engine is cool and the car is parked.

  1. Park on level ground, turn the engine off, and let it cool.

  2. Open the hood and find the dipstick, usually with a bright loop handle.

  3. Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel.

  4. Push it all the way back in, then pull it out again.

  5. Look at where the oil film ends. It should sit between the two marks.

  6. If the level is below the low mark, add the oil type listed in the owner's manual a little at a time.

  7. Put the dipstick back, close the cap, and shut the hood.
