How to use a library self-checkout kiosk

The self-checkout kiosk at the library lets you check out books, movies, and audiobooks on your own. This plain-language guide walks through every step so you can practice at home and feel ready when you visit.

The 8 steps at the library kiosk

  1. Find the self-checkout kiosk

Look for a screen near the library's exit, usually marked 'Self-Checkout' or 'Self-Service'. It is a small stand with a touchscreen and a flat scanning pad.

  2. Tap the screen to start

Touch the screen anywhere or tap the 'Start' or 'Check Out' button to wake the kiosk up.

  3. Scan your library card

Hold the barcode on the back of your library card under the red scanner light, or place it flat on the scanning pad. Some kiosks let you type your card number instead.

  4. Enter your PIN if asked

If the screen asks for a PIN or password, use the on-screen keypad to type it in, then tap 'OK' or 'Enter'.

  5. Place items on the scanning pad

Set one book, movie, or audiobook at a time on the flat pad — barcode side down. Many library kiosks use RFID, so the title appears on the screen on its own.

  6. Check the screen after each item

Watch the list on the screen. After each item is added, a green check mark or 'Checked out' appears. If you see a red message, ask a librarian for help.

  7. Tap 'Finish' and pick a receipt

When everything is checked out, tap 'Finish' or 'Done'. Choose 'Print receipt' or 'Email receipt' so you have a list of due dates.

  8. Take your items and the receipt

Gather your library materials and your receipt. Walk out through the security gates — if an alarm sounds, return to the kiosk and ask a librarian to check it.

Helpful tips

  • Bring your library card every time. If you forget it, the front desk can look up your account.
  • Place items one at a time. Stacking can confuse the scanner and miss a title.
  • If the kiosk says an item is 'on hold' or 'cannot be checked out', take it to a librarian.
  • Librarians are always nearby and happy to help — it is okay to ask at any step.
