The Soo Locks Visitor Center at 312 W Portage Ave in Sault Ste. Marie is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and provides free access to raised viewing platforms overlooking the famous Soo Locks, where visitors can watch enormous Lake Superior freighters — sometimes 1,000 feet long — pass through the locks at eye level, just feet away. Exhibits inside the visitor center trace the history of the locks from the 1855 original construction through the modern Poe Lock and MacArthur Lock that handle today's Great Lakes fleet, and a scale model demonstrates how the locking system works. The center is open daily during the navigation season and offers one of the most fascinating and accessible engineering spectacles in North America at no charge.

Hi, I'm Iris! Tell me what you're looking for — a place to preview (like "Park Library" or "a dentist office"), a specific city (like "Lansing, MI" or "Petoskey, MI"), or a how-to video (like "tying shoes" or "self-checkout") — and I'll find it for you.
