About This Location

Lake of the Clouds Overlook in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park on M-64 in Ontonagon County is one of the most iconic and frequently photographed panoramas in the entire Great Lakes region — a sweeping view of the pristine, wilderness-ringed lake 300 feet below, set within 60,000 acres of old-growth forest that is the largest remaining tract of such forest between the Rockies and the Adirondacks. The easily accessible overlook, reached by a short walk from the parking area, offers visitors a glimpse of Upper Michigan wilderness that looks essentially unchanged from pre-settlement times. The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park surrounding the lake is Michigan's largest state park.
