About This Location

Fayette Historic State Park at 4785 II Rd in Garden on the Garden Peninsula of Michigan's Upper Peninsula preserves a remarkably intact 19th-century industrial ghost town — the Fayette Iron Smelting Company furnace complex, which operated from 1867 to 1891, producing pig iron from Marquette ore using charcoal from the surrounding forests. The preserved townsite includes 20 original buildings including the furnace complex, opera house, hotel, workers' homes, and the company superintendent's house, all set against the dramatic limestone cliffs of Snail Shell Harbor on Big Bay de Noc. The park also offers camping, hiking, kayaking on the protected harbor, and one of the most visually stunning settings in the Upper Peninsula.
