About This Location

Big Sable Point Lighthouse at the end of a 1.5-mile trail through Ludington State Park is one of Michigan's most iconic and remotely beautiful lighthouses — a 112-foot black-and-white striped tower completed in 1867 on a wild, isolated stretch of Lake Michigan dune shoreline that can only be reached on foot or by kayak. The lighthouse is operated by the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association in partnership with the Michigan DNR and is open for tours in summer, with exhibits on lighthouse history, the keepers who served there, and the history of Great Lakes shipping. Overnight stays in the restored keeper's quarters are available through the GLLKA, offering an unforgettable off-grid lighthouse experience.
