How to use an ATM
An ATM lets you take cash out of your bank account on your own. This plain-language guide walks through every step so you can practice at home and feel confident the next time you need to use one.
The 8 steps at the ATM
Find a safe ATM
Pick an ATM in a well-lit place, like inside a bank lobby or grocery store. Stand close to the machine so no one can see your screen or keypad.
Insert your debit or ATM card
Look at the picture on the card slot. Put the card in the same way the picture shows — usually chip-first, face up. The machine pulls it in or asks you to remove it.
Enter your PIN
Use the keypad to type your 4-digit PIN, then press 'Enter' or the green button. Cover the keypad with your other hand so no one can see the numbers.
Choose what you want to do
The screen shows choices like 'Withdrawal', 'Deposit', or 'Balance'. Tap 'Withdrawal' to take out cash, or 'Balance' to see how much money is in your account.
Pick your account and amount
If asked, choose 'Checking' or 'Savings'. Then tap one of the cash amounts on the screen, or tap 'Other amount' to type your own. Stay within your daily limit.
Confirm and wait
Check the amount on the screen and tap 'Yes' or 'Confirm'. The machine may ask if you want a receipt — tap 'Yes' to get a paper record.
Take your card, cash, and receipt
The ATM gives you your card back first. Take it right away so you do not forget it. Then take the cash and receipt and put them in your wallet or bag.
Check the screen says 'Thank you'
Wait for the screen to return to the welcome message. This means your session is over and the next person cannot use your account.
Helpful tips
- Never tell anyone your PIN. Banks will never ask for it by phone or email.
- If something feels wrong — a loose card slot, a hidden camera, or someone standing too close — cancel and walk away.
- Count your cash before leaving the ATM and tuck it away before you step outside.
- Keep your receipt or check your account in your bank app to make sure the amount matches.
