Cross in the Woods is a nationally designated Catholic shrine at 7078 M-68 in Indian River, Michigan, attracting between 275,000 and 325,000 visitors annually to see its 55-foot tall redwood cross with a seven-ton bronze corpus of Christ sculpted by Marshall Fredericks — among the largest crucifixes in the world. Founded in 1946 by Bishop Francis J. Haas and formally declared a national shrine by the USCCB in 2006, the grounds include an indoor and outdoor church where Masses are celebrated daily year-round, numerous outdoor shrines, a Shrine of St. Peregrine, and a nationally recognized Nun Doll Museum housing the largest collection of dolls dressed in religious habits in the United States. Grounds are open 365 days a year from dusk to dawn.
