Jackson Mine Park in Negaunee commemorates the site of Michigan's first iron ore discovery in 1844, when surveyor William A. Burt's crew — guided by Marji-Gesick, a local Ojibwe leader — detected an unusual compass reading that led to the find, sparking the Upper Peninsula's iron mining boom. The park was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1956 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and today features a playground built near the Jim Thomas Pavilion funded through a MDNR Trust Fund grant and Patronicity crowdfunding, along with picnic areas and trailhead access to the Iron Ore Heritage Trail and RAMBA mountain biking trails. It is located at 199 Tobin St, Negaunee, MI.
