The Charlevoix South Pier Light Station has guided boats through the Pine River channel between Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix since the first tower was built in 1884, with the current steel structure installed in 1948. Painted its signature red since 2009 in line with the maritime mnemonic "Red Right Returning," the lighthouse is owned by the City of Charlevoix and preserved by the Charlevoix Historical Society, and remains an active navigational aid for the Beaver Island ferry.
